Senator fires back at U.S. family upset with seal hunt
A Liberal senator has replied to a family in Minnesota upset about Canada's seal hunt with a letter denouncing the United States for executing prisoners at home and killing people in Iraq.
The McLellan family had written to Canadian senators to say they cancelled a vacation in Canada because of the hunt, which they called "horrible" and "inhumane," Montreal's La Presse reports.
In her response, Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette said that what she finds horrible is "the daily massacre of innocent people in Iraq, the execution of prisoners - mainly blacks - in American prisons, the massive sale of handguns to Americans, the destabilization of the entire world by the American government's aggressive foreign policy, etc."
She said Americans are not in a position to criticize others. "They must start to look at their own behaviour, the permanent heightening of the planet's insecurity since the election of Bush," she told La Presse.
"All senators received the letter from the McLellans and I was the only one to respond," she said.
The family "did not choose a good cause," she added.
In their letter, the McLellans said they love Canada and have Canadian ancestors but cancelled a trip to Canada last year because of the seal hunt and will scrap plans for one this year if the spring hunt goes ahead, La Presse said.
Hervieux-Payette, a lawyer and former Liberal MP, was appointed to the Senate in 1995 by then prime minister Jean Chrétien. She last drew public attention with a private member's bill in 2004 to outlaw spanking of children.
In defending the seal hunt, she called it a centuries-old practice and part of the livelihood of coastal residents both native and white.
She invited the McLellans to come to Canada to see a humane society that lives in safety and respects the traditions of its native people.
It is not clear whether she might pay a penalty for remarks that could be seen as anti-American. Once appointed, senators have a job until retirement at 75.
Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette,Thank you! Within the next few weeks our annual seal hunt will take place and im sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. More backlash to come im sure from both sides of the ice floes.

She should team up with Danny. I knows they wouldn't cause the racket!
I find this funny a Liberal Senator wants to equate the whacking of Seals in Newfoundland to handgun sales in the US and George Bush Whacking the Al Queda terrioist....go figure...an old age tradition and someone questions you about it, instead of saying mind your own business and let us mind ours...lets blame this Seal whacking on to the US because it is George Bush's fault and all of the loose cannons in the states....just another typical liberal response....do not except responsibility....blame it on someone else....just like the liberals here...Bill clinton did not have sex with Monica the cigar did.....
go to mcdonalds tracy says?why go at all.go vegan.stop killing all animals.
What I can't understand is that millions of cows are killed with a hot rod shoved up their ass and everyone don't have a problem with that...chickens and other animals --- similar faith....there is no backlash ...but groups show the baby pups when infact it is illegal to kill them...and every illerate jumps on it and keeps the ball rolling without knowing alll the facts....maybe Tracy look at your statement ....being ironic with what you are saying (cows are not nice so its all right the...maybe all that beef in texas should be banned from the world also...
Because man can't live of vegetables alone. Why do you think we have incisors and molers because we are neither Herbivores nor Carnivores we are omnivores.
People have gotten so high and mighty they forget that even with all of our inteligence we are still a mammal.
Vegans need to take B12 pills which have extracts from animal byproducts.
You would also have to give up chocolate. I'm surprised there are any female Vegans knowing that fact alone. Not a sexist comment just espousing a commonly known fact women like their chocolate. Me too!
stop killing baby seals.grow up.do movies of seals and peguins and sell them.not movies of clubbing their heads in.im sure people like morgan freeman would only be to glad to come to canada and do movies with seals and penguins.march of the penguins won a academy award or do you not see movies only seal clubbing movies.
OH ME FRIGGIN NERVES!
bad news, morgan freeman came by a few weeks back to do a documentary on the seals and penguins on our icefloes here.he was savagely attack by one of our water buffalo and injured.as luck would have it paul mccartney was there at the time and airlifted mr.freeman off the floes and to a hospital.all of us in newfoundland would like to wish mr. freeman a speedy recovery.
I'd just shoot the seals with my handgun. ;)
Oh, and Mr. or Mrs. or Ms. or whatever anonymous. I don't know how many packing plants you've worked in, but I've worked in one and been inside a few more and I've yet to see a cow killed with a "hot rod shoved up its ass". The plant I worked in as well as the others I've seen use what's called a captive bolt gun, it killed them instantly, no "hot rods" or bodily orifices involved, just a quick shot to the back of the head. Since, as any hunter knows, adrenaline taints the flavor of meat, no meat packer in his right mind would want animals slaughtered in his plant by anything other than the quickest, least stressful method possible. Unless of course he wanted a reputation for selling tough, nasty tasting meat.
See Justin...now you know exactly how improper info can affect someones opinion....now the shoe is on the other foot (I put that in there to see if anyone would pick that up) but it doesn't matter if they kill seals or cows or chicken or whatever --- it is all the same....just that seals make a pretty picture on a TV and they can generate alot of money with it...
