A Touton Run...For those who didn't know. A Touton is only fried bread dough but somehow cooked outside it becomes much more then that. I doubt if you'll ever see Martha Stewart cooking this tasty little thing, and if so,she wouldn't do it justice. Such a simple little thing and each summer it brings us great pleasure just to make a Touton run. Years ago we would hike to the beach and cook them on a wood fire but in the past few years we seem to be using the ATV for the same purpose. Some evenings we have friends along and it could be to the mountain top for a late evening snack. It's those simple little pleasures and freedoms we have here in Newfoundland that makes our lives so enjoyable at times. We can leave our home in Cape Ray at 6pm in the evening on an ATV and within minutes be on a mountain top or on sandy beaches that stretch for miles. By 9 pm we can be back home and feeling like you had a mini holiday. In that same time frame we may of observed Moose,Caribou or many different species of waterfowl. It's January and for lunch today i fried up a pan of Toutons but somehow they just didn't taste the same as those cooked on our little evening runs.

A few images from our Touton runs.........

I got the mountain tops covered, but it's a long darn ways to a beach. ;) Down here we call that fry bread, I guess we aren't as original as you when it comes to the name. I've never made it while 4 wheeling though, might have to try it some time. We usually take some hot dogs and build a fire for a weiny roast, or a big pot and everybody brings a can of chilli, all different kinds, we dump it all together and heat it up over the fire, it sounds kind of nasty but it's actually good, especially on a cold, rainy day. Failing that, I always keep a good supply of canned sardines in my pack, and I bring plenty of smoked deer sausage. You're right about one thing though, there's some things that just aren't the same at home as they are when you're outside and having fun, I'd never eat canned chilli at home.

By the way, I checked out those pics you told me about, WOW! That looks like a good time for sure. We've been talking about some two day rides for a couple years but we haven't got it done yet. There's plenty of places where we could, no fancy rooms waiting at the other end though, just a tent and what you pack in with you. There are some rustic Forest Service cabins around here that are only accessible by ATV, foot, or horseback though. They rent them out most of the time unless the rangers need to use them for a base camp. That one pic that you had there, the one of the steep grade by River Brook, that really reminds me of a trail that we ride. It's on a mountain called Benbow, it's about five miles of switchbacks down the side of the mountain, goes past an old, abandoned mine shaft, big ore dump with some shop buildings and stuff, at the bottom is an abandoned town, looks like everybody just dropped everything and left yesterday, but it's been abandoned for almost 50 years. I just thought it was funny how similar the trails look, the Benbow trail looks identical at the top, same kind of terrain. You're digging out the 4 wheeling pics, you must be itching for summer almost as bad as me. Thanks for the great post Wayne.
